Inter-Professional Education
Program Overview
Interprofessional education occurs when participants from multiple professions learn together. With Interprofessional Education (IPE), there is an intentionality of having participants learn from, with, and about each other to gain an appreciation for the different professional roles and perspectives to optimize collaboration (WHO, 2010). Based on the Adult Learning Theory, IPE allows participants from various disciplines to learn together, teamwork, and collaboration along with patient safety. Efforts to design and implement IPE activities have been met with both success and challenges. Organizations promoting interprofessional education are being formed to promote this effort and place it on the agenda of all who educate health care professionals. This is aligned with the goal of qualifying the workforce and building competencies in health clusters to enable the new healthcare model.
